Long Bio: Katharine (Kathy) Hansen, Ph.D., creative director and associate publisher of Quintessential Careers, is an educator, author, and blogger who provides content for Quintessential Careers, edits QuintZine, an electronic newsletter for jobseekers, and blogs about applied storytelling at A Storied Career. Kathy, who earned her PhD in organizational behavior from Union Institute & University, Cincinnati, OH, is an eight-time author/co-author.

Kathy's passions lie in three overlapping areas: writing, educating, and applied storytelling.

On teaching, Kathy says: "I have had more than six wonderful years of teaching college students and helping them tell their stories in business. I adore designing instruction, testing it in the classroom, and then tweaking it to make it better. I also have a respectable record of research and publication in academic journals."

On writing, Kathy says: "When I am not lucky enough to be in the classroom, I educate through writing. In addition to eight books, and I’ve written hundreds of articles and other works, primarily on career management, job-hunting, college writing, and college study-skills topics. My articles have been widely reprinted. For me, writing is like breathing; it’s something I have to do -- and I do it better than most. I have considered myself a writer since third grade. My current favorite kind of writing is blogging, and I dream of making my living as a world-famous blogger!"

On applied storytelling, Kathy says: "I am also a student of and blogger about applied storytelling, a topic I became fascinated with while completing my PhD in organizational behavior. I wrote my dissertation about using storytelling in the job search, which is also the topic of my seventh book. Storytelling and career is a major topic of my blog, A Storied Career, but I’m fascinated by many other applied uses/forms of storytelling. I also believe people can change their lives by changing their stories, and I am developing workshops to help folks do that."

On career management, Kathy says: "I hold top credentials in the career-management field –- Credentialed Career Manager and Master Resume Writer, both from the Career Management Alliance, where I serve on the executive board. I write dazzling resumes and cover letters that help professionals tell their stories, and did so for five years in my resume-writing business, but it’s not a practice that’s at the center of my passions. I continue to do this work for a very small, select group of clients. I have been widely interviewed and quoted on career topics."

On her current professional life, Kathy says: "I am at the point in my life where I have transcended organizational politics and established a joyful life, full of love, learning, freedom, and yes, hard work."
